Fudia Smartt discusses regulations for tackling toxic work cultures in the HR Director magazine.

7 October 2022

Focusing on highly regulated firms such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), Employment Law Partner Fudia Smartt’s article in the HR Director magazine asks whether improvements to regulations are enough to effectively tackle toxic work environments.

Noting that a poor working culture creates environments where bullying and harassment are able to thrive, effecting employees’ health and wellbeing, Fudia states: “We appear to be living in times of seismic change. The #metoo and #blacklivesmatter movements have irrevocably changed perceptions regarding permissible behaviours in the workplace, and this has led to regulators focusing upon increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in regulated firms” whilst going on to add: “At the same time, there has been a push for employees to bring their authentic, “whole” selves to the workplace, which arguably can only be achieved where staff feel safe to do so.”

Fudia discusses the published findings of the SRA and FCA, summarises relevant employment rights and considers what the next steps are in improving workplace culture.
