A Tribute to our Colleague and Friend, Michael Parker
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Michael Parker. Michael was a cherished member of Spencer West and a highly respected figure across the international legal community. His loss will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
Michael joined Spencer West in 2020, following an extraordinary four-decade career at Clyde & Co, where he held numerous senior leadership roles across the UK and the Asia Pacific region. A Cambridge graduate, he qualified as a solicitor in 1979 and built a distinguished career as a commercial litigator with a focus on international trade, regulatory matters, government investigations, and the logistics sector. His expertise and judgement were sought after by leading trade bodies and businesses around the world.
Michael’s leadership extended far beyond his legal practice. He served on Clyde & Co’s Worldwide Management Board from 2003 and was appointed Senior Partner of the Guildford office in 2006. In 2010, he relocated to Asia to become Managing Director for the Asia Pacific region, overseeing a period of remarkable expansion in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Colleagues across continents admired him for his clarity of thought, his steady guidance, and his commitment to developing and empowering others.
At Spencer West, Michael quickly became far more than a Partner. As the firm grew globally, it became immediately clear that he was the natural choice to serve as our International Business Director. He played a pivotal role in shaping our international strategy, strengthening cross-border connections, and advising on recruitment and integration across our global community. His instinct for people — their strengths, their ambitions, their ways of working — was unmatched. Many of our colleagues considered him a mentor, a guide, and a trusted sounding board.
But Michael was more than an exceptional lawyer and leader; he was a remarkable human being. Warm, witty, thoughtful and practical, he had a wonderful ability to put others at ease and to offer calm, steady wisdom in moments of complexity. He cared deeply about those around him and invested his time generously to support others’ growth.
After spending ten years in Hong Kong and Singapore, which he described as “wonderful years full of brilliant memories”, Michael settled again in Surrey, where he continued to give back to his community. He was involved with St Edward’s Church in Sutton Park, served as Chair of the Home Start Trust for Runnymede and Woking, and was a passionate supporter of London Irish, Munster, and Ireland rugby. His life outside the law was as full and generous as the professional path he walked.
Michael’s influence on Spencer West will remain a lasting part of our firm’s story. His values, his humanity, and his guidance have helped shape the culture we are proud of today. We will miss his presence enormously.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Michael’s family and loved ones. We are grateful for everything he shared with us — his expertise, his kindness, his humour, and his friendship.
He will be profoundly missed, and he will never be forgotten.
