Paolo Caldato

I always feel privileged when clients ask me to help them with a problem; in assisting them to solve it I am allowed a glimpse into their world, and their thoughts, that few others are permitted. To repay that trust and confidence, I strive to resolve disputes for my clients as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible, and to give them honest, unvarnished and robust advice that will help them to achieve the best outcome.

Paolo is an experienced dispute resolution lawyer and Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Courts Civil Proceedings). He covers a wide range of areas, with his focus being on high-tech commercial disputes in the Digital Health, Healthcare & Life Sciences and Technology, Media & Telecoms sectors. He also has experience of advising on cannabusiness disputes relating to the commercialisation of CBD.

His experience includes advising clients on a wide range of disputes in the above (and other) sectors, as well as assisting them during pre-contractual negotiations and other pre-dispute stages on how best to avoid a costly and disruptive disagreement from arising in the first place. Paolo’s clients include:

  • companies (from start-ups through to very large enterprises);
  • directors, officers and other individuals; and
  • government entities.

Paolo’s areas of specialism include:

  • M&A and shareholder disputes;
  • other contractual dispute resolution and risk management; and
  • discrete civil procedure issues, including jurisdiction battles, security for costs and other interim relief applications, disclosure disputes and taking of evidence/deposition/examination requests.

Much of Paolo’s work, which has spanned the County and High Courts, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court and Privy Council, is cross-border, and he also has considerable experience in co-ordinating with professionals in other jurisdictions and/or fora conducting parallel proceedings.

Paolo joined us as a partner in 2019, prior to which he had trained and spent 14 years at Simmons & Simmons in London (with a six-month secondment to its Milan office). Paolo was seconded for four months in 2016 to Selex ES Ltd., an electronics and information technology business within the Leonardo aerospace, defence and security engineering group.

Paolo is a Tech London Advocate specialising in digital health issues, and a member of both the British Italian Law Association and of the Society for Computers and Law. He has sat on the Legal Issues and Compliance Committee of the Association of British Healthtech Industries. Legal 500 describes Paolo as a lawyer “to note” and he is listed as a “Rising Star” in the Legal 500 2020 edition.
