Ignacio Domínguez Torrado is a Mexican lawyer and founding partner of Spencer West’s Mexico practice, with more than 25 years of experience advising domestic and international clients on corporate, commercial, intellectual property and regulatory matters. His practice combines business-oriented corporate advice with deep experience in the protection, commercialisation and licensing of intangible assets. He advises companies at different stages of their development, from establishing operations in Mexico to structuring commercial relationships and addressing ongoing legal and compliance requirements.
Ignacio began his legal career in 1998 at Uhthoff, Gómez Vega & Uhthoff, where he initially worked on trademarks, patents and copyright. In 2003 he took responsibility for the firm’s corporate practice and was promoted to partner in 2007. During more than 23 years at the firm, he developed and led the corporate practice, providing advice on corporate structures, agreements, franchises, licensing and intellectual property-related transactions. He subsequently served as Managing Partner of DOT Consulting, working with businesses on their commercial and regulatory needs.
His work covers the incorporation and governance of Mexican entities, business and contractual arrangements, negotiations, intellectual property portfolio strategies, franchising systems, licensing and brand protection. He regularly assists with advertising, promotions, consumer protection and Mexican regulatory requirements, including matters involving COFEPRIS and other administrative authorities. His broader experience extends to dispute prevention, negotiation and mediation, and commercial matters involving sports, media and entertainment.
Ignacio has advised clients across the pharmaceutical, healthcare, financial services, tourism, airline, spirits, food and beverage, textile, retail, consumer goods and entertainment sectors. He is particularly interested in work where corporate strategy, intellectual property and regulation intersect, and in helping international businesses navigate the Mexican legal environment without losing sight of their commercial objectives.
In addition to private practice, Ignacio has contributed to international legal publications. His work includes articles on Mexican franchising trends and the development of sports law in Mexico, as well as publications on licensing, intellectual property, trade secrets and pharmaceutical advertising. He has taught intellectual property law at Universidad Panamericana and case method at Universidad Iberoamericana.
Ignacio earned his law degree from Universidad Panamericana (2000), an LL.M. from the University of Virginia (2002), and a postgraduate diploma in commercial law from Universidad Panamericana (2004). He is fluent in Spanish and English. His approach is to develop long-term client relationships through practical, clear and commercially aware legal advice, coordinating local Mexican requirements with broader international priorities.
