Intellectual Property and Technology Partner Jowanna Conboye discusses copyright in a case involving TikTok.
Posted: 13 May 2021Intellectual Property and Technology Partner Jowanna Conboye has been featured in a BBC News article discussing a copyright case involving TikTok.
The popular social media platform used an actor's voice in its text-to-speech function, which can be played over videos within the app, without permission.
Jowanna's comment on this case rounds off the article. She says: "Actors' performances, including vocal performances, are protected by copyright. A key question is where the voice artist's content was obtained from. In commercial situations, copyright is often assigned to another business. But even if that is the case, the voice artist or actor normally retains moral rights, which should ensure that they are recognised as the person performing."
