Spencer West’s Howard Ricklow advises David Arnold on James Bond video game theme song
Howard Ricklow, Partner at International law firm Spencer West, has advised acclaimed composer David Arnold on the rights aspects relating to the composition of the theme song for the new James Bond video game, 007 First Light, released in collaboration with Lana Del Rey.
The title track, First Light, forms part of the launch of 007 First Light, a new origin-story game that introduces a younger James Bond at the start of his career. Arnold, one of the Bond franchise’s most recognisable musical figures, co-wrote and produced the song for the game, continuing his long-standing association with Bond music in a new medium.
Howard Ricklow advised on the rights matters surrounding the composition, bringing to the matter his experience in music, media and intellectual property. The matter reflects Spencer West’s growing profile in the entertainment sector, where legal advice increasingly sits at the intersection of creative ambition, technological advancements and evolving rights frameworks.
The project also underlines the changing face of the cultural and commercial importance of Bond title music. With 007 First Light positioned as a fresh chapter for the franchise, the composition of its theme song carried both creative and rights sensitivities, requiring globally sound legal support that was attuned to the legacy of the Bond brand as well as the demands of a major contemporary entertainment release.
Spencer West Partner Howard Ricklow said the matter brought together several strands of entertainment and IP law in a uniquely high-profile setting.
“This was a great matter to work on because it sat at the meeting point of music, brand legacy and modern interactive entertainment. It was a pleasure to once again support David Arnold on a project that will introduce Bond’s musical world to audiences in a new way.”
“Advising on rights issues for a Bond theme song is a reminder that iconic cultural properties demand careful legal stewardship as well as creative excellence,” Ricklow said.
David Arnold spoke of the importance of having specialist advice on a project connected to one of entertainment’s most enduring franchises.
“It’s no secret that working on a Bond theme carries a particular sense of responsibility, because the music is such an important part of its identity,” Arnold said.
“It’s always a pleasure working with Howard. His advice was clear, commercial and highly attuned to the sensitivities around a project of this scale, and in a new medium. It gave me confidence that the rights aspects of the composition were being handled with the care and attention it deserved.”
