International law firm Spencer West has joined the UK AI Trade Association (UKAI), the leading membership body representing businesses across the UK’s AI sector.

Through its membership, Spencer West will contribute legal expertise and insight into the rapidly evolving AI and digital regulation landscape. The firm joins the membership group of industry, academia, and policymakers combining to support responsible innovation and ensure businesses benefit from clear, practical legal frameworks.

Spencer West will also play an active role in UKAI’s Legal Working Group, a dedicated forum for senior legal and compliance professionals from household name organisations, focusing on practical challenges such as contracting and procurement, liability in multi-party deployments, explainability, and sector-specific assurance. It meets quarterly to shape collaborative outputs including draft guidance, frameworks, and policy input for government consultations.

Simeon Spencer, Senior Partner at Spencer West, spoke of the importance of joining a forward-thinking and vital industry association at this time.

“Joining UKAI is an important step for Spencer West. AI is shaping the future of every sector we advise, and it is essential that law firms are part of the dialogue. Our membership reflects our commitment to helping clients innovate confidently while navigating regulatory change,” Spencer said.

James Clark, Partner specialising in Data Protection, AI and Digital Regulation at Spencer West, reiterated the flashpoint for AI regulation.

“AI regulation must strike the right balance between encouraging innovation and safeguarding rights, privacy, and trust. At Spencer West, we are working with clients at the forefront of AI development, and those implementing it into their day-to-day,” Clark said.

“By joining UKAI and its Legal Working Group, we can bring practical legal perspectives to the table, helping to shape the intersection of AI deployment and legal frameworks that support growth and accountability.”

UKAI CEO Tim Flagg said Spencer West’s membership reflected the Association’s mission to create a strong, collaborative ecosystem that balances ethical considerations with the need for business-friendly, evidence-based regulation.

“We are delighted to welcome Spencer West to UKAI. Not only does their expertise in data protection, AI, and digital regulation add an important dimension to our membership, but their full-service offering reflects our holistic approach to what we do,” Flagg said.

“AI doesn’t sit in one team, and we believe the most valuable conversations happen when those perspectives are in the room together. Spencer West’s contribution to the Legal Working Group will strengthen our mission to ensure the UK remains a global leader in AI.”

UKAI plays a central role in the UK’s AI ecosystem. It represents companies of all sizes with an interest in AI, from startups to global leaders. By working closely with government and regulators, UKAI ensures that policies foster innovation and economic growth without stifling progress.

Spencer West’s membership reflects the firm’s wider strategy of supporting clients in sectors where technology, data, and law intersect. The firm’s AI and digital regulation practice advises on compliance, data governance, contractual frameworks, and cross-border regulatory challenges.
