Spencer West launches South Africa office with strong backing from global colleagues
International law firm Spencer West marked the launch of its South Africa office with an evening event in Sandton attended by Partners, clients and senior leaders from across the firm’s global community.
The launch of the South Africa practice is another milestone for the growing global firm, joining its 360 Partners in 24 jurisdictions.
Opening the event, Founding Partner of Spencer West South Africa, Sanusha Govender, spoke of the momentum behind the new office and the culture that underpins the firm.
“Spencer West offers a different way to practice law and that is why I chose to build this office,” Govender said.
“Collaboration underpins the way we work. Spencer West colleagues came from around the world to be here because this is who we are as a firm. We show up, we support one another and we build together.”
The event was marked with a warm welcome from Alan Mukoki, the CEO of the South African Chamber of Commerce, who expressed his hope that the firm would bring prosperity and opportunity for the people of South Africa.
Spencer West Global Co-Founder and Managing Partner Antoine West reflected on the growth of the firm and the significance of the South Africa launch, including the alignment between the South African market and Spencer West’s approach.
“We believe in our values driven model that gives Partners ownership of their work and support from an international community. The demand for autonomy, flexibility and independence is rising. This aligns with how we operate,” West said.
“Sanusha and her team have shown real dedication. Their leadership brought this practice to life and South Africa strengthens our presence in Africa with deeper local insight and broader capability.”
The event included a panel discussion titled Death, Taxes, and Cross Border Drama: A Roast of Global Wealth Planning. Spencer West Partners Liesl Kruger (South Africa), Hilesh Chavda (United Kingdom), Michael Derus (Germany), and Antish Maroam (Mauritius) examined current developments in international wealth planning, rising regulatory complexity and trends affecting cross border clients.
The launch marks a further step in Spencer West’s global strategy. The firm plans to expand its South Africa office with senior appointments and build on its connections with the Kenya, Rwanda and Mauritius offices.
