Mark Tan is an international tax Partner with over 20 years of experience in helping companies structure their affairs globally. With a unique blend of accounting and legal expertise, Mark has held senior management roles across diverse markets, enabling businesses to optimise cross-border tax efficiency and compliance. His extensive in-house and legal experience positions him as a leading strategist in the field.
Mark practised as a Solicitor predominantly in the UK. However, his most significant contributions have been in his senior management positions at Asahi, The LEGO Group, and Louis Dreyfus Commodities.
At Asahi, Mark served as Head of Tax for the UK & Ireland, EMEA, and the Americas, where he built a high-performing tax function and led a major international restructure of the company’s operations. His efforts in rationalising UK Alcohol Excise Duties and cultivating strategic partnerships with HMRC have left a positive impact on the organisation’s tax strategy and compliance efficiency.
During his tenure at The LEGO Group, Mark was instrumental in implementing global tax planning strategies that reduced the effective tax rate and enhanced compliance across 15 jurisdictions. His leadership of a cross-functional international tax team and his role as the primary liaison with country managers and tax authorities underscored his ability to navigate complex tax landscapes and foster beneficial tax terms and resolutions.
In his role at Louis Dreyfus Company, Mark managed tax matters across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He improved the company’s global trader program and secured enhanced tax benefits, demonstrating his adeptness at handling government affairs, cross-border tax issues and structuring.
Earlier in his career, Mark honed his legal expertise at the U.S. law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf in London. He advised on a wide range of international transactions including M&A, capital markets, and corporate governance. This legal background complements his commercial in-house experience, providing a comprehensive approach to international tax law.
Mark’s career has taken him around the globe, living and working in various countries, which has enriched his perspective and adaptability in managing international tax affairs. His educational background includes a Masters of Law in International Taxation from Australian Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Law along with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of New South Wales. The University of New South Wales is renowned for its prestigious law and commerce faculties, consistently ranked among the top in Australia and recognised globally for their academic excellence and rigorous training.
He is admitted to the Supreme Court of England and Wales as a solicitor and holds a current practising certificate with the Solicitors Regulatory Authority, along with being an associate member of CPA Australia.
